Verge restoration

March 2023

One of our Parish Councillors was busy last week further preparing the wildflower site.  Plug plants were planted - 10 each of cowslips, corncockle and birdseye speedwell plants to give some early colour and some seed will be sown in the next few weeks to try and establish some more plants this year, to get a full display next year.

3 signs have been erected to advertise the plans for the verge requesting no mowing is done.

5th November 2022

Our verge restoration project started to take shape on a slightly wet and windy Saturday last week, when some of our team members, Michael and Terry, prepared the trial site.

They strimmed, scarified and sowed some Yellow Rattle seeds (which will help to reduce the grass growth next year).  This means we will be able to plant and sow some wildflowers in the spring.

This trial is a result of a presentation we were given earlier this year by Janet Cobb – a board member of the “Restoring Shropshire’s Verges Project”.  For more information, check out their Facebook page below:

Spending a bit of time and effort now in developing a site to encourage native wildflowers to thrive will help establish a habitat for wildlife including insects, spiders, snails, small mammals and birds.

If anyone is interested in helping with this project, we would be really grateful of some help in the spring, especially if this one is a success and we develop some more sites around the parish.

The team will be meeting this Saturday 5th November to start the process of creating a wildflower verge.  This will be on Sutton Road at the Colehurst junction.
